James Turrell

LIGHT something that makes things visible or affords illumination
James Turrell is an artist who uses light as his main medium.

Inspiration
As a child in a Quaker family, James Turrell was about to be introduced to the Meeting. He asked his grandmother to explain what it was all about, he said "her explanation to me was you went inside to greet the light. And this idea, to go inside to find that light within, literally, as well as figuratively, was something that really propelled me at the time. I really thought that that's what I should do."

Goal
He aims to change viewers' perception with his work and envelope them in the art
He creates passages that allow the audience to see only the stars, enabling them to watch the earth's rotation. Other passages erase the horizon, capturing the sky.
He creates light tunnels to have viewers enter and be enclosed in light

Roden Crater: started in 1972, still not complete. how much did it cost?
 "two marriages and a relationship..."

the Meeting House in Houston
originally the idea of Hiram Butler
"the meeting of the space that you're in with the meeting of the space of the sky."

Philosophy
"I want to feel light physically. We drink it as vitamin D; it's actually a food. We are heliotropic, and it has a big effect on the skin, produces vitamin D. We also have a big psychological relation to light. All or most experiences, near death experiences, are described with a vocabulary of light. So, for me, this quality to feel light exists, almost like we see it in a dream."

The idea for this project was to design a place for twelve twigs. This creative process included a lot of nature walks and  being the recipient of quite a few judgmental glances. I used magazine for my paper material and modge podge as my adhesive. I believe I stayed on course with my original idea from my parti with only a few alterations.

A Place for a Leaf

You have a leaf and a 12 x 12 piece of paper. That's it. Now go ahead and find a place for this leaf you found...
This is my final project. The idea was for the leaf to be incorporated into the project, not simply displayed by it. I liked the feeling that that the paper was blossoming out from the leaf. It appears to have many separate plane, but in reality most of them are one piece.

This is where I came from. This was the original model of this idea. Again, I liked the concept of blossoming outward and enveloping the leaf, but I wanted to have it stand upright. I also changed to a more translucent paper after I received some advice to mimic the translucency and waxy texture of my leaf. Someone told me they like this one more than the final... but I disagree :)

design visualization

Joe tea reminds me of a summer filled with picnics, good friends, sunshine, and tofu. I recently lost the joe tea bottle that I've been using as a water bottle and I feel uncomfortably uninspired without it. That is why I've decided to name my blog after one of my favorite beverages. I hope you enjoy it as much as lemonade on a sunny day!
