The Weatherspoon Art Museum Cabinet
Principles
Rhythm: The shelving of the cabinet and the exposed bolts on the doors add a nice rhythm to the structure
Balance: The cabinet seemed to lack a balance until we made the door widths asymmetrical to correspond with the curvature of the top. I think we have achieved a new sense of balance
Emphasis: The cabinet, in my opinion, allows the emphasis to fall on the merchandise within the cabinet. The doors just want to be opened
Unity: I think the changes we've made to the cabinet have strengthened the sense of unity. The curve seemed separate from the rest of the cabinet before, and now the uneven door widths bring that down throughout the cabinet, as well as the openings that follow the same curve
Proportion: The proportion of the cabinet seems right in comparison to the people who will be experiencing it. Each element of the cabinet also seems to be proportionate to the next
Elements
Line: I think there is a beauty in the contour of our design. The strength of the cabinet is seen in the strong vertical lines of the cabinet structure, and the curved top makes the design interesting and draws your eye to it
Color: The birch, acrylic, and brushed nickel are all cohesive with the materials already in place in the gift shop. This consistency of color allows the cabinet to have a feeling of belonging within the lobby space of the museum and to fit with the shop. Kate also wanted the Weatherspoon green to tie it to the museum, and we have added that as an accent to the cabinet
Shape: The shape of the cabinet was mostly dictated by the shell given to us by Frank Cheney. This is the one element we've stayed true to throughout the evolution of the design. All the decisions we have made have been to complement this original shape
Texture: I think the wood grain adds a subtle texture to our piece. Patrick asked us to consider taking this texture and playing with the direction of the wood grain to add an intriguing feature. Another texture of the cabinet is in the exposed bolts. We decided to celebrate this texture instead of attempting to hide it. These two textures, the natural and the modern, contrast each other nicely
Form: The overall form of the cabinet is elegant and simple. It is strong and beautiful. It is the perfect balance between function and art
Space: The cabinet is spaced to best display the merchandise it will hold. The interior is shelved for display, the doors hold racks for books, pamphlets and magazines, and the drawer is available for storage. The space the cabinet will go into is intended to improve the circulation of the museum and draw attention to the store
